Synopsis

This is going to still be spun a bit, but here's what I told the Graduate School:

This project explores the impact of marketing strategies on emerging identities of Moroccans, focusing on ways a racialized minority, the Gnawa, have imagined themselves as a diasporic community. Using ethnography, music analysis, and media critique, I examine how Gnawa music is produced and circulated in order to discern ideologies of identity imbedded and embodied in performances and recordings.

Sounds intriguing, John. I wish you best in that endeavor. How cool to incorporate music into the thesis. I suppose its their biggest outlet, or form of personal identity? By the way, is this for a doctorate in sociology?

Yeah, music expresses identity, but I think it can also be used to create identity. This is for a doctorate in anthropology, with emphasis on folklore and cultural studies.

Good luck, John. Keep your ears open and record everything. Usually it's the small seemingly inconsequential acts and statements that prove decisive in this sort of endeavor. And say "Marhbabikum" to Khalid and Nadia!
